Chiarad a to be new ambassador to the U.S.
La Nacion
July 23, 2010

The government is analyzing designated Alfredo Chiaradia, current secretary of trade and international economic relations at the Foreign Ministry, to be the new Argentine ambassador to the United States, according to government sources.

As such, Chiaradia would replace Hector Timerman, who left the post when he was named Foreign Minister. The DyN news agency reported last night that the position was already offered to the official by President Cristina Kirchner. However, there was no official confirmation from the ministry after calls made by LA NACION. "No designation has been announced," they said at the press office at the Palacio San Martin. Chiaradia neither responded to messages from LA NACION.

Chiaradia's eventual designation would be part of a series of moves that the Foreign Ministry made in the past few hours. Yesterday, the German government accepted the credentials of ex-Vice Minister Victorio Taccetti as the new ambassador to that country. Taccetti will replace economist Guillermo Nielsen in that post.

Chiarad a had given his resignation for the post he occupied together with Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana. When Timerman took over, he asked him to stay in his post. Chiaradia was one of the main negotiators with China to unblock the restrictions on the purchase of national soy oil places by the Asian giant. He's been in the post since 2004, when he replaced Martin Redrado. A career diplomat, he got his degree in Economics from U.B.A.
