BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Argentina's Senate approved the nationalization of Aerolineas Argentinas on Wednesday, moving to return to state hands the financially troubled Spanish-owned company.
The 46-21 Senate vote in favor of the state takeover of Aerolineas Argentinas and its subsidiary Austral comes weeks after Argentina's lower house of Congress approved the measure and was the final step in making the nationalization law.
The bill says that Congress will set the purchasing price and requires the state to hold the majority of the company's shares.
People celebrated in Buenos Aires, many holding inflatable planes.
The company was privatized in 1991 and is struggling with financial woes and labor conflicts. It would return to state control with an estimated $900 million debt.
The two carriers account for about 85 percent of domestic air traffic.
