Press Release
September 18, 2007
Former Clinton Department of Justice Official, Capitol Hill Veteran Joins ATFA
WASHINGTON - American Task Force Argentina (ATFA) announced today the hiring of Mr. Robert Raben, former U.S. Assistant Attorney General, as the organization's Executive Director. Mr. Raben will lead ATFA's education and advocacy campaign on Capitol Hill to raise awareness of the Argentine debt default and its impact on US taxpayers, businesses and bondholders.
With nearly 20 years of professional experience, Mr. Raben has built a highly respected legislative career as a senior Congressional staffer and Assistant Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice. With a nuanced understanding of both the legal subtleties and the political realities of the issues he handles, Mr. Raben is well-positioned to lead ATFA's advocacy to Washington lawmakers.
"I am proud to join ATFA Co-chairs Dr. Robert Shapiro and Ambassador Nancy Soderberg in calling upon the United States government to address the issue of Argentine default, and in representing the interests of U.S. taxpayers, pensioners and bondholders who have been harmed by Argentina's refusal to pay its bills," said Mr. Raben. "The ATFA has already brought the issue to the attention of officials at the U.S. State and Treasury Departments, the White House, Capitol Hill and with foreign governments, including in Germany and Italy. I'm happy to enhance these efforts."
Robert Raben is the founder of The Raben Group, LLC, a legislative consulting and lobbying practice that develops strategies to achieve complicated public policy goals. He brings an aggressive, bipartisan approach to the firm, built after a highly respected legislative career that began with seven years on Representative Barney Frank's staff and concluded with House Judiciary Committee Chairman Henry Hyde's endorsement of his Justice Department appointment.
ATFA Co-chair Dr. Robert Shapiro, former Undersecretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs for President Bill Clinton, says that Mr. Raben's talents and background on Capitol Hill will be an added value to the efforts of ATFA:
"I am pleased to have Robert join us in our efforts with U.S. thought leaders and policymakers," said ATFA Co-chair Dr. Robert Shapiro, "I am confident that with his help we will bring Argentina back to the negotiating table with the bondholders in the near future and settle this matter once and for all."
ATFA, through a variety of events and research initiatives, works to encourage the United States government and other Argentine debt stakeholders to take action on behalf of American taxpayers, businesses and bondholders. ATFA's website, www.atfa.org, serves as a clearinghouse for news and information related to Argentina's restructuring and the ATFA's efforts.
Made up of an alliance of organizations, the ATFA is co-chaired by The Honorable Robert J. Shapiro, former Under Secretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs in the Clinton Administration, and Ambassador Nancy Soderberg, Ambassador at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York from 1997 to 2001.
